The Nittnaus family, Gols
The Nittnaus family has been making wine in Gols since 1684. Anita and Hans took over the winery in 1985, at the height of the Austrian wine crisis, at a time when Austria was not considered a source of quality red wines. They began by planting Cabernet and Merlot, but at the same time ran a trial with Blaufränkisch in the prime Ungerberg parcel. The 1990 vintage yielded an exceptional wine and led to the realization that great, world-class wines could be made purely from local varieties.
Following this, in 1994 Hans Nittnaus coined the term Pannobile (a combination of Pannonia and nobility) and gave it as a name to the association of Gols winemakers. Today the winery covers 36 hectares, half on the warm Heideboden plain around Gols and half on limestone and schist on the slopes of the Leitha Range near Jois – and since 2006 everything has been farmed biodynamically. The winery is regularly counted among Falstaff's top wineries, and Comondor received 97 points in the 2025 guide. In September 2026 Wine Enthusiast announced Hans Nittnaus as a nominee for Winemaker of the Year in the Wine Star Awards, after 50 vintages, describing him as one of the most active and experienced winemakers in Austria, and possibly even in the world.
