Armin and Stefan Tement
Manfred Tement took over the reins of the winery at too young an age, after the early death of his father, with just three hectares to his name. "The fear that I wouldn't succeed was my greatest driving force," he says. He chose to focus on Sauvignon Blanc, against convention, until in 1991 the wine magazine Der Feinschmecker crowned him the best Sauvignon Blanc producer in the world. In 1986, together with his colleagues, he founded the STK association, which created an independent vineyard classification system in Styria.
Today his sons Armin and Stefan manage about 80 hectares, certified biodynamic (Demeter and respekt-BIODYN since 2022), in partnership with horse and cattle breeders, and they maintain a forest of their own for energy. The winery's cellar is carved into an ancient coral reef, 20 million years old, above the Zieregg vineyard. The regional wines are named for the soil (Muschelkalk, Kalk & Kreide, Ton & Mergel), and above them stand the classified vineyard wines (1STK and GSTK), which spend up to 30 months on the lees and are bottled unfiltered. The winery is regularly counted among Falstaff's top wineries.
